REST FRIENDS

Rest friends, my newest screenprint design! This 3 color t-shirt is based off my cute fluffy cat Fava and the start of a new unexpected friendship. I created this shirt not only to show off my kitty but to portray the importance of acceptance and open mindedness. Looks can be deceiving and by accepting others into your life, you might just make a new friend…maybe even a new rest friend. Take a look at the process video I made of the creation of this shirt!

This video shows a glimpse into my screen printing process. What it doesn’t, are the rough sketches of Fava that fill up pages in my sketchbook. I draw poses of her, getting ideas of what her comic would be.

Cats move so quickly and so often it’s hard to get a great mental picture before they’re off to a new spot. Lucky for me, Fava is pretty lazy and only moves when there is incoming food, the vacuum, string, bird chirps from outside, or the occasional flying creature that finds its way into our home. One day a moth made its way in, landing comfortably in our living room. Fava got up from her usual spot on the chair and thus began the starring competition. Those eyes were locked! She eventually won because the moth started to fly around again, swooping closer and closer to her level. She made some initial pawing attempts that failed, but a few more and she got it into her grasp. She wasn’t trying to hurt the moth though, but was more curious of what she caught. She gently released the moth from her grip and it stuck around for a moment before fluttering off. In that moment there was a connection. Needless to say, the idea was born! I start to rework some of the sketches and finalize them digitally with my drawing tablet.

I make film positives, which are the color separated artwork printed onto a clear sheets of plastic. These are used to transfer the artwork onto the screens. Once my art is transferred, I mix my ink, align my screens and print some groovy t shirts!

Thanks for reading and watching all about the creation of Rest Friends.
